WEST END – Cuthbertson High School golfer Layla Meric finished second in the NCHSAA 3A Girls Golf State Championship on May 11 at Beacon Ridge Golf & Country Club.

She finished 7-over 79, trailing state champion Emily Matthews of Eastern Alamance by eight shots.

Five other area student-athletes made the leader board. They were as follows:

• Kayla Hightower (Marvin Ridge) tied for third with 12-over 84.

• Kate Dann (Charlotte Catholic) tied for eighth place with 15-over 87.

• Madi Brensinger (Charlotte Catholic) tied for 18th with 21-over 93.

• Melissa Wyman (Weddington) tied for 24th with 23-over 95.

• Maddie Wallace (Weddington) placed 35th with 32-over 104.
