Union County

09/19/08: Union County and Monroe paid tribute Sept. 11 to its heroic firefighters – the fallen and those still serving – with a new memorial dedicated on the lawn of the county’s historic courthouse. Placed on the main walkway, the $25,000 memorial, paid for by the county and Monroe, is a historic fire bell that sat on the courthouse lawn in the late 1800s. Dozens of firefighters from the county’s 18 departments and Monroe’s, and residents, paid homage to three volunteer firefighters killed in action, who are memorialized on the tribute: Tommy Griffin of the Sandy Ridge department, who died in 1967; Kenneth Strain of the Hemby Bridge department, who died in 1999; and Todd Hage of the Wesley Chapel department, who died in 2007 Rolf Loken Photography
