Basketball
• Butler’s Demontez Stitt scored 22 points in the Bulldogs’ 65-64 win at Myers Park Tuesday, Jan. 31.
• East Meck’s Antonio Houston scored 26 in the Eagles’ 70-59 win over Independence Jan. 31. With the win, the Eagles improve to 19-1, 9-0 (SW4A) and have all but wrapped up the conference.
• Waddell’s Joylisa Conner scored 37 points in the Raiders’ 56-54 win over Berry Academy Jan. 31. It was the first win of the season for Waddell.
• Southlake Christian’s Autumn Provenzano scored 14 points in the win over Covenant Classical Jan. 31. The Eagles are now 15-1.

Volleyball
• Providence outside hitter Meredith Moorhead was named to Prepvolleyball.com’s high school All-American team. North Carolina’s other players are Noelle Dyk (Mooresville), Christina Falcone (Raleigh Gibbons) and Megan Hodge (Durham Riverside).

Basketball
• Central Cabarrus’ Ish Smith, a Wake Forest signee, scored 24 points in the Vikings 82-56 win over Concord Robinson Jan. 13.

• Charlotte Catholic’s Brendan Winters scored 19 points in the Cougars’ 73-46 win over Berry Academy Jan. 13.

• Christ School, in Arden, handed Charlotte Christian its first loss of the season 81-78 Jan 13. Sean Scott and Rochard Gibson each scored 16 points for the Greenies.

• High Point freshman Melvin Crowder was named the Big South conference Freshman of the Week. Crowder, who played high school ball at Vance and Prince Avenue Prep in Pickens, S.C., scored 15 points in the Panthers’ 100-90 win over VMI Jan. 12. He scored 10 points in the 82-62 win over Coastal Carolina Jan. 9. VMI guard Travis Holmes (Christ School) was also nominated for freshman of the week.

Track and field
• Charlotte’s Shareese Woods provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships after setting school records in both the 200- and 400-dash at
Virginia Tech Jan. 14-15. Freshman Pat Springs set a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 19-2.5.

• Charlotte guard Leemire Goldwire was named the A-10 Player of the Week. He led the 49ers to wins in their first two conference games with back-to-back 20 point games.

• Winners from the Cougar Invitational wrestling tournament over the weekend (Jan. 7-8): 103 – Zach Priester (Char. Catholic); 130 – Patterson Maharajh (Char. Christian); 135 – Aaron Borrelli (Char. Christian); 145 – Kayvon Kazemini (Char. Latin); 152 – Andrew Rodbel (Prov. Day); 160 – Robert Paridis (Char. Catholic); 171 – Andrew Henson (Char. Christian); 189 – Charlie Pitts (Char. • Myers Park’s Brian Mobley scored 24 points in the Mustangs’ 53-47 upset of Providence Jan. 6.

• West Charlotte’s Cristal Caldwell scored 29 points in the Lions’ 67-55 win over Hopewell Jan. 6.

• Garinger senior Patricia Holmes has averaged a double-double in points and rebounds for the Wildcats in the past five games.

• Victory Christians’ Jacobe Simpson had 22 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks in the 81-66 loss to Charlotte Latin Dec. 30.

• Episcopal’s (Pa.) Gerald Henderson, a Duke signee, had 23 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in the 59-55 loss to Our Savior New American (N.Y.) Dec. 30

• Statesville Christian’s Doneal Mack, a Florida signee, had 29 points, six rebounds and four assists in the 70-68 loss to Laurinburg Dec. 31.

• Episcopal’s other star player Wayne Ellington, a North Carolina signee, scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the 70-60 double-overtime win against Blair (N.J.) Dec. 31.

• North Meck wrestler Tyler Martin, champion at 160 pounds, was named the most outstanding wrestler at the New Year’s Brawl at Berry Academy over the weekend. Individual champions included West Charlotte’s Brian Richardson (189) and North Meck’s C.J. Gillis (103) and Chase Drye (130).

• Charlotte Catholic point guard Katlin Moore scored 35 points in two games at the Gaston Gazette tournament. She is averaging 15 points a game this season.

• Liberty junior and Charlotte native Larry Blair scored 38 points in the Flames’ 83-30 win over High Point Jan. 3.

• East Meck’s Antonio Houston scored 17 points, eight in the fourth quarter, in the Eagles’ 58-44 win over Providence Dec. 16.

Brian Mobley scored 20 points for Myers Park in the Mustangs’ 85-79 win over Weddington Dec. 16.

• Hickory Grove’s Amire Moore scored 23 points in the Lions’ 72-70 win over Concord First Assembly Dec. 16.

• Independence wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was named the MVP in the Patriots’ 38-19 win over New Bern Dec. 10. He caught eight passes for 205 yards – second highest total in a title game. He scored twice, returned three kicks for 102 yards and broke up a goal-line pass on defense.

• Hopewell’s Courtney Rann and Amber Holt combined for 55 points in the Lady Titans’ 103-42 win over West Mecklenburg Dec. 9.

• VMI guard Chavis Holmes (Christ School) was named the Big South Freshman of the Week. He averaged 12.7 points and 4 rebounds in three games for the Keydets. He scored a career-high 20 points in the 72-63 win over Army Dec. 8.

• Charlotte Christian forward Omar Carter had 33 points and 15 rebounds in the Knights’ 101-98 double-overtime win over Gastonia Huss Dec. 9.

• Vance football took top ME-CA 6 honors this week. Rico Bell won defensive player of the year. Alex Spisak won the top offensive player award. Jeff Simpson won coach of the year.

• Butler guard Tremaine Tillman hit a three-pointer as time ran out in the Bulldogs’ 94-92 upset win over North Meck Friday, Dec. 2. The loss ended the Vikings’ 23-game winning streak.

• Queens shooting guard Timon Farely (Charlotte Christian) went 5-of-7 from the three-point line and scored 26 points in the Royals’ 98-81 win over West Virginia Tech Dec. 2. The Royals are 4-1.

• Winners from the Jim Hayes Wrestling Invitational Saturday, Dec. 3. Josh Tegard from Butler won the 103 weight class. Stefan Avorkyla from East Meck won the 215 class. Kase Graham from Providence finished No. 3 in the 119 class. Ken Gretz from Hopewell finished third in the 135 class. Michael Cox from Myers Park finished third in the 140 class.

Dec. 2-8, 2005
• Weddington’s Ralph Giuliano (130), Justin Epifanio (140), Zach Filter (160) and Josh Campbell (275) won their weight classes at the Redhawk Tournament in Monroe Saturday, Nov. 26. Filter also was named the tournament MVP.

• Charlotte Latin junior Scot Robison was recently selected to participate in USA Swimming’s 2005 National Select Camp in Colorado Springs. He qualified in the 100 freestyle. The camps help in the Olympic development process and prepare swimmers for membership on the national team.

• The following football players are winners of the student athlete awards from the Charlotte Touchdown Club: Athlete of the Year – Michael Remley (Providence); Defensive Player of the Year – Josh Kichner (Monroe Sun Valley); Comeback Player of the Year – Vincent Littlejohn (Harding). The awards will be presented at the Bronko Nagurski Award ceremony Monday, Dec. 5.

• Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

• South Meck soccer player Alli Sadow and football player Brad Marren were nominated for the Wendy’s Heisman Award.

• Cannon’s Suvi Gross was named the most outstanding player at the Cannon Classic over the weekend. The Cougars defeated Comenius School (S.C.) 67-17 and Gaston Day 37-35.

• Harding’s Sherrika Jordan was name the Queen City 3A/4A cross country runner of the year.

• Independence quarterback Daryl McFadden was 15-of-29 passing for 197 yards and ran for a touchdown in the 22-7 win over Butler.
Nov. 11-17, 2005
• Former Independence safety Daniel Cooke was named the Big South Freshman of the Week. He had 13 tackles and an interception for Gardner-Webb in the 38-7 loss to Charleston Southern Saturday, Nov. 5.

• Providence’s Corey Darrington rushed for 205 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries in the Panthers’ 34-21 road win over Weddington Nov. 4.

• Charlotte Country Day receiver Andrew Shaw set school records for yards in a season (602) and career (987) in the win over Asheville School.

• Myers Park setter Kelli Howard is the Southwestern 4A Volleyball Player of the Year.

• Olympic quarterback Ben Williams needs 87 passing yards to break the school season record. He has 3,002. The record was set by Antonio Miller (3,088) in 2003. The Trojans host Monroe Parkwood in the first round of the N.C. 3AA playoffs Friday, Nov. 11.

• Providence kicker Chris Hinkebein hit a Mecklenburg County record
52-yard field goal in the 34-17 win over Myers Park Friday, Oct. 28.

• Providence Day lacrosse player Steve Zande committed to Fairfield University. Zande was a N.C. Independent Schools 3A second-team nomination last season and scored 23 goals for the Chargers in an injury-shortened season.

• The Cannon School girls’ cross country team won the N.C. Independent Schools 2A title over the weekend. Heather Ekstrom, Katie Buenaga, Cathleen Ress and Stephanie Schauder made the all-state team.

• West Meck’s Richard Brannon ran for 137 yards in the Hawks’ 35-7 win over Waddell.
Oct. 28-Nov. 3, 2005
• Providence’s Corey Darrington set a school record with 330 rushing yards in the Panthers’ 35-14 win over Butler Oct. 21. He also had four touchdowns.

• North Meck freshman Kimberly Spano won the ME-CA 6 girls’ cross country meet Oct. 19. The Vikings won the conference title for the second-straight year, winning the ME-CA 8 title last season.

• Providence’s Meredith Moorhead was named the Southwestern 4A volleyball tournament MVP as the Panthers defeated Myers Park 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-22) Oct. 20 to clinch the conference title.

• Myers Park’s Travis Cook scored four goals in the Mustangs’ 6-0 win over Independence Oct. 20. The Mustangs are ranked No. 12 in the N.C. 4A poll.

• Charlotte Latin’s No. 1 Paige Ford won in singles competition over Charlotte Christian’s Victoria Fischer 6-1 6-0. The Hawks are 13-0.
Oct. 21-27, 2005
• Vance’s Justin Byers scored three touchdowns in the 40-7 win over Concord Robinson Oct. 14. He had a 36-yard reception, a 78-yard punt return and a 95-yard fumble recovery.

• Butler sophomore Kinsey Pate won the Southwestern 4A singles tennis title Oct. 14. She defeated Kara Schillings from Providence in the semifinals 6-1, 6-2 and Kasey Ellis from South Meck 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 in the final.

William Rann’s 249 receiving yards against Hopewell Oct. 14 was the second-best performance in Mecklenburg County history. The West Charlotte wide receiver came up 22 yards short of Independence’s Red Springs’ record of 271 yards, set in 1982.

• Charlotte Country Day defeated Providence Day 7-1 Monday, Oct. 17. Kris Byrd’s two goals gave him a team-leading 12 for the season. He also has six assists, second on the team.

Katherine Buehler had seven digs, four blocks and 11 kills as Cannon School defeated Covenant Day 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) in the first round of the MAC conference volleyball tournament Oct. 18.

• United Faith goalkeeper Brian Jones had 26 saves in the Falcons’ 1-1 (4-3 PK) win over Gaston Day to win the SPAA conference title Oct. 18.

Alexander Drummond

Soccer

The junior striker leads the Cougars (No. 4 in the N.C. 3A poll) with 12 goals. On Oct. 4 against Berry, Alexander scored a hat trick and the next night against Olympic, he opened up the scoring to push the Cougars to a 3-1 win and the top of the Queen City 3A/4A conference.

The senior quarterback threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third in the Bucs’ 27-9 win over N.C. 4A power Crest Monday, Oct. 10. Drew was 15-of-27 passing for 205 yards. Crest won the N.C. 3AA title last season.
