On Friday, Aug. 17, Charlotte Catholic visits neighborhood rival South Mecklenburg in South Charlotte Weekly’s Game of the Week. Kickoff is slated for 7p.m.
The game marks the home debut for new Sabres coach Rocky White, a former West Mecklenburg High head coach and Butler assistant. A capacity crowd is expected, with Charlotte Catholic fans projected to easily fill up the visitors’ side of the stadium.
The Cougars are led by junior Elijah Hood, a highly recruited fullback who also is expected to see his first high school action as a linebacker, too. South Meck will be aided by 6-foot-3, 255-pound lineman Brandon Floyd, whose recruiting stock has soared since last season, and hard-charging running back/receiver/defensive back Craig “C.J.” Thompson.
The Game of the Week won’t be the only major matchup in south Charlotte this weekend, though.
Also on Friday, Myers Park will play one of only two games in its home stadium this season, when it plays host to Garinger.
The Mustangs will have to play four of their six scheduled home games at Memorial Stadium while the visitors-side bleachers at Gus Purcell Stadium are replaced because of poor condition.
In other action, Providence Day visits tough public-school team Belmont South Point, Charlotte Christian hosts Northeast Prep and Providence welcomes Hopewell.
