The 2012 Olympics begin in earnest on Saturday, July 28, and South Mecklenburg High School graduate Ricky Berens will be among the competitors who most certainly will be worth watching over the next two weeks.
Berens is participating in his second consecutive Olympiad, having won a gold medal with the United States men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay team in 2008. He was joined on that relay squad by American hero Michael Phelps, along with Ryan Lochte and Peter Vanderkaay.
This year, Berens will compete individually in the 200 freestyle and on the 4×100 and 4×200 freestyle relay teams, and the University of Texas graduate has a chance to earn more than one medal.
The 200 freestyle begins on Sunday, July 29, with the finals scheduled for Monday, July 30. The 4×100 will be held on Sunday, while the 4×200 takes place on Tuesday, July 31.
Berens, who graduated from South Meck in 2006, held 51 state records during his four-year swimming career for the Sabres.
