Basketball Notebook for February 17

Sabres, Mustangs headline final regular-season Super 7 rankings

With the public-school conference playoffs beginning this week, South Charlotte Weekly released its final regular-season Southern Mecklenburg Super 7 basketball rankings (see charts below), and there’s little surprise about which teams reside at the top.

Myers Park holds the No. 1 ranking among the girls teams. It’s a position the Mustangs have held since December, when they went to Raleigh and won the popular HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational tournament. Myers Park closed the regular season with a 24-0 record, including a 14-0 mark in the Southwestern 4A conference.

South Mecklenburg High is the top Super 7 boys squad, thanks to a seven-game winning streak entering the Southwestern 4A tournament. On Feb. 13, the Sabres, who opened the postseason with a 20-4 record (12-2 in league play), won their first-round conference tournament game against Independence, 63-47.

In other first-round Southwestern 4A boys games, Myers Park defeated Providence, 55-44, aided by 21 points from guard Patrick Wallace and 18 points, seven rebounds from Major Thomas; Butler topped Ardrey Kell, 66-53; and East Meck beat Rocky River, 57-49.

The finals of the Southwestern 4A tournaments are Friday, Feb. 17 at Ardrey Kell, with the girls starting at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m.

On Feb. 13, in the first round of the ME-GA 7 3A/4A boys tournament, No. 2 Charlotte Catholic rolled past Garinger, 93-54. Charlotte Catholic, which finished the regular season with records of 19-5 and 9-3, was slated to face Harding in the second round on Feb. 15, after South Charlotte Weekly went to press.

The ME-GA 7 3A/4A finals are Friday at Berry Academy. The girls tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 8 p.m.

The Class 3A and 4A state tournaments begin on Monday, Feb. 20, with higher-seeded teams hosting first-round games.

The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A tournament begins Tuesday, Feb. 21, with higher-seeded teams hosting first-round contests.

South Charlotte Weekly will not publish Super 7 rankings again until each area team has completed postseason play.
