Janice Ritter, superintendent for Diocese of Charlotte Catholic Schools, announced to parents at Charlotte Catholic High School in a letter on Wednesday, May 21, that Jerry Healy resigned his position as principal at the school.
Healy’s resignation follows a recent investigation at the school after the Charlotte Catholic High School Foundation, an independent organization that supports the school, questioned the use of foundation funds provided to the school. Healy was put on paid leave during that investigation, which started in March, while the situation and information was reviewed. In the recent letter to the school, Ritter said the Diocese hired auditing firm Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP, a subsidiary of Deloitte LLP, to review all accounts belonging to Charlotte Catholic High School. The company’s work also included interviewing personnel and reviewing electronic files.
Auditors did uncover “instances of questionable disbursements from accounts” belonging to the school, the letter said, though the transactions are separate from Charlotte Catholic High School Foundation accounts. Other areas of concern also were found, Ritter said in the letter, but she did not go into detail as the concerns dealt with “a personnel issue.”
The Diocese is taking the necessary steps to fill the principal position as quickly as possible.
“Mr. Healy has been a dedicated educator and employee of the Diocese throughout his professional career,” Ritter also said in the letter. “He has had a positive impact on the lives of many students and their parents. It is my hope he will be remembered in this light.”
Healy has served as principal of Charlotte Catholic since 2003, according to the Catholic News Herald. He started as a teacher 44 years ago at St. Patrick School in Charlotte and moved to Charlotte Catholic High as a teacher in 1975. He also has served as principal at St. Gabriel School and Holy Trinity Middle School, both in Charlotte, according to the Catholic News Herald.
