Improvements moving forward at Foxhole

Officials say improvements at the Foxhole landfill, located near Ballantyne, are moving forward as planned.

Crews currently are working on the construction of the next phase of the landfill, which will take up about 18 acres. The Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners recently approved expansion of the recycling center on the front side of the landfill property, and officials will soon put out a construction contract to “basically double the recycling space” at the center, according to Joe Hack, with the county’s Solid Waste Management.

The addition at Foxhole will streamline the process of dropping off recyclable materials at the landfill, Hack said, and he hopes the improvements make life easier for the south Mecklenburg residents who use the facility along with residents of Union and Lancaster counties.

“Our goal is to never stop receiving materials while we expand the recycling center,” Hack said. But that doesn’t mean people may see some signs of construction when they drop off recyclables, though Hack said a majority of the work will take place in a spot where landfill customers don’t typically go.

The landfill also is in the middle of work on a general expansion that includes adding capacity and updating equipment.  The project, the second phase of five, will add 34 acres and approximately 2 million tons of capacity to the facility, according to a meeting held earlier this year. Hack said recently construction on that phase – on 18 acres – should wrap up by November.

Also, Hack said the county has approved the next 10-year version of the solid waste plan. The department gathered suggestions and ideas over three days of discussion, which wrapped up Jan. 28, and used the information to identify ways to improve the county’s management of solid waste.

The landfill is located at 17131 Lancaster Hwy.
