Kids in some of Charlotte’s high schools came together this week for Mecklenburg Ministries “In Our Own Backyards.”
The four-day workshop, taking a spin off the phrase “Not in MY backyard,” showed local students more about what’s happening around them and how others need help. Students learned about poverty and homelessness in Charlotte and about the different faiths and cultures in the community, as well as learning from one another to become future leaders for the area.
The group took part in a poverty simulation and did service projects at Second Harvest Food Bank, Crisis Assistance Ministry, the YWCA and Urban Ministries. They also learned about public transportation and visited area worship centers.
Mecklenburg Ministries, an interfaith collaboration of area congregations, hosted the workshop. Find more information at the group’s website, www.meckmin.org.
