Arrest made in Cotswold-area break-in

Police recently arrested 21-year-old Michael Whelchel, charging him with attempting to break into a home on Wendover Road.

A woman called police around 2:30 a.m. July 4, telling them someone had just smashed a window on the patio door of her home in the 1200 block of Wendover Road, near Cotswold.  The suspect left the home before police arrived, but they found several windows broken in the home’s backyard.

Shortly later, police found a man on the sidewalk in front of a home a short distance down the road. He had torn clothes and was bleeding, according to police, who arrested Whelchel for first-degree burglary.  Whelchel has been arrested a number of times in the past, including for robbery with a dangerous weapon and burglary.

He’s being held in the Mecklenburg County jail under a $50,000 bond.
