Charlotte Christian School ready for summer break

What will you do this summer?  Many of us will take much needed time to travel and visit with family and friends. Some will take trips to the beach to unwind from the busy school year while others choose to sleep in and take a slow approach to the summer morning.

But what will you do when the traveling is done and the kids have spoken the words, “What are we going to do today?”

As a working mother of two I try not to let those words take me by surprise. During the early spring months we sit down as a family and take a look at the family’s summer calendar. I have found that making camp selections early allow for my children to choose a variety of different camps and possibly even have a friend join them.

Attending summer camp can be a great opportunity for children to expand their horizons.  As human beings we tend to gravitate to things that make us feel the most comfortable and often our children are the same. The summer months are great opportunities for children to explore new activities which may foster a new love for cooking, science, math, art, or even a new sporting interest.

I’ll never forget the time I met a young camper who attended one of the enrichment camps at Charlotte Christian School. He told me that he did not want to go to camp, but rather stay at home and watch his favorite television show. I encouraged him to find something new that interested him at camp. When I checked on him later in the week I found it was his “best week ever.” I asked what made his week so great and he shared that he made some new friends and the “coolest science project ever.”

Isn’t that what we all want for our children? The opportunity to try something new and to build relationships that may last a lifetime? When choosing your camps this summer look for camps that will educate the whole child while broadening their interests and talents.

As an educator and mom I know that this is a continual process. The camps that my children have loved the most have provided them with opportunities to excel outside of the classroom while presenting them with the challenge of trying something new.

Whether you would like for your children to attend camp for one week or for many weeks, there are a variety of camps available that will peak the interest of children who love to play, learn and explore.
