South Charlotte’s McMullen Creek and Four Mile Creek greenways are much cleaner this week after more than 110 volunteers removed 133 bags of trash from the two locations this weekend.
The volunteers performed the Saturday, Oct. 2, clean-up as part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ Big Sweep, which targeted rivers and streams across the area. In all, 530 volunteers removed 707 bags of trash while cleaning 46.1 miles of stream and shoreline. The total haul weighed more than 15,000 pounds.
At McMullen Creek Greenway, 52 volunteers removed 69 bags of trash. At Four Mile Creek Greenway, 60 volunteers removed 64 bags of trash.
Erin Oliverio, water quality educator for Storm Water Services, said some of the more unusual items collected this year included a giant candy cane yard decoration, a baby training toilet, 27 tires and a smashed television from the Catalina Motel.
