South Charlotte teens nominated for Blumey Awards

Several south Charlotte schools and theater students have been nominated for awards in the inaugural Blumey Awards, sponsored by Blumenthal Performing Arts and Wells Fargo.

Four south Charlotte high schools are participating in this year’s competition, a new program patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards that will award trophies for Best Actor and Actress among several others.

In south Charlotte, Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg high schools and Charlotte Latin and Charlotte Christian schools are participating in the competition.

Each musical was viewed and evaluated by a panel of three judges from Charlotte’s theater community. The judges awarded points according to detailed guidelines, nominating six finalists each for 13 different categories of awards.

In south Charlotte, the following musicals and students were nominated for awards:
• Wells Fargo Best Musical: Charlotte Christian, “West Side Story;” Charlotte Latin, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat;” South Mecklenburg, “Bye Bye Birdie”
• Best Actor: Will Branner, Charlotte Latin
• Best Actress: Kelly Kapur, Ardrey Kell High; Liza Veilleux, South Mecklenburg High
• Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Armburst, Charlotte Christian; Ryan Carter, Charlotte Latin
• Best Supporting Actress: Emma VanDeVelde, Charlotte Christian
• Best Featured Performer: Mozelle Cox, Charlotte Christian; Davis Heniford, Charlotte Latin
• Best Overall Direction: Charlotte Christian; South Mecklenburg High
• Best Ensemble/Chorus: Charlotte Christian; Charlotte Latin; South Mecklenburg High
• Best Choreography Execution: Charlotte Christian
• Best Student Orchestra: Ardrey Kell High
• Best Set Construction: South Mecklenburg High

The awards ceremony is May 20 at 7 p.m. at the Belk Theater. Tickets went on sale May 3 and range from $30 to $45. Tickets are available at www.BlumenthalArts.org, 704-372-1000 or from the box office in the Belk Theater lobby, 130 N. Tryon St.
