Girl Scout Brownie Troop 1348 recently partnered with teachers and students at Beverly Woods Elementary School to provide cookies for a U.S. soldier named Coleman.
The project, known as Cookies for Coleman, was an extension of a project Amanda Dillashaw’s second-grade class has done for the past two years. The class periodically sends packages and letters to Coleman, who is currently stationed in Alaska recovering from surgery. Several members of Girl Scout Troop 1348 are in Dillashaw’s class and decided to surprise Coleman by advocating for cookie donations from others.
“I donated three personal boxes of cookies,” Dillishaw said. “We’ve had lots of lessons and discussions about bravery and what soldiers do for us so it’s great for them to get such a real-world experience with a real-life soldier.”
Along with the donated boxes of cookies, Dillishaw’s class wrote letters to Coleman.
“It might not be the most fun situation where he’s at, so we try to cheer him up,” Dillishaw said. “I think it’s a great lesson. It’s great to show respect.”
