Filmmaker brings documentary to Charlotte

The award-winning documentary filmmaker Nancy Kates will bring her film “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin” to Time Out Youth on Thursday.

The film, which has won more than 20 international awards, follows the life of Rustin, who helped organize the 1962 March on Washington, and shows how a gay man was instrumental in helping end segregation in America. Time Out Youth, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning group in the Charlotte area, will host a screening of the film at its donor and volunteer appreciation reception.

The screening is Thursday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m. That’s followed by a question-and-answer session with Kates and Rustin’s partner, Walter Naegle.

The event is at the Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, 130 N. Tryon St.

Find more information on the event at the group’s website, www.timeout youth.org.
