All aboard! Penn Station East Coast Subs has opened on Park Road in the Park Selwyn Terrace shopping center. If you’re from Cincinnati, you should be very familiar with the delicious taste of these hot subs.
What began as a single sandwich shop in Ohio has grown to more than 220 outlets. Marc Nagy, an Ohio resident, is a huge fan of Penn Station and the Charlotte area. He decided to own his own Penn Station right here in south Charlotte. He knows this is where he wants to live, and who can blame him. Marc partnered with John Dalton as managing partner, and together they expect this Penn Station to be the first of several here in south Charlotte.
Penn Station offers an array of very tasty, grilled East Coast-style submarine sandwiches, along with fresh-cut fries and hand-squeezed lemonade. It’s all about fresh. The meats are sliced fresh daily, as are the cheeses and vegetables, to create the scrumptious steak, chicken and other subs. The lemonade is made from scratch, as are the fries.
In fact, the potatoes are first blanched in hot oil, and then finished off back in the fryer when you order them, well known as the method to create the best-tasting fries. The hot sandwiches are grilled meats and then go in the oven to create the

perfect taste and texture. They also bake off the sub rolls, which are outstanding. Learn more at www.penn-station.com.
More shrimp sauce, please! If you enjoy hibachi and teriyaki, you will really appreciate one of the newest eateries in south Charlotte: Japan Cuisine. It’s located in the Fountains Shopping Center at Ardrey Kell, and just opened Jan. 2nd.
Vin Tran decided to open a second restaurant given the 10 years of success he’s experienced in Lancaster, S.C., with Japan Restaurant. Think of it as hibachi prepared delicacies, just like when you sit around the oversized flat grills and a chef tosses the food in the air. The difference here is that the selections are prepared in their open kitchen for you to enjoy in the dining room or for take-out, at a much lower price.
Hibachi and Teriyaki offerings include chicken and steak; you also can choose from shrimp, scallops, salmon, jumbo shrimp and filet mignon. Everything is made fresh to order. Depending on how hungry you are, select from the Entrees, which are lunch portions with one meat or seafood; the Combinations, which include two items, such as shrimp and chicken for a heartier appetite; or the Japan Dinners with three options; like steak, shrimp and scallops. All of the selections are served
with fried rice, Japanese sweet carrots and shrimp sauce. Ah, that shrimp sauce – made from scratch, it is absolutely fantastic. You can dip the meats and veggies in it, you can mix some in with your rice. It is a delectable accompaniment to the entire dish. Really scrumptious!
Now add sushi rolls; about a dozen different rolls, each one prepared and cooked to order… yes, cooked. Given the small size of the restaurant, Vin thought it best to offer only cooked sushi so no one has to be timid about ordering it. If you’re new to sushi, this is absolutely your ideal opportunity. About a dozen different rolls are offered, each served with wasabi, soy sauce and pickled ginger. Japan Cuisine is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. for dinner. A website is in the works, so stop by and grab a menu. Phone: 704-321-0011.
