Charlotte Symphony hosts Kenny G on Sept. 23
by Alison Woo
Three decades, 23 albums and sales exceeding 75 million records.
That’s the record Kenny G, lesser known as Kenny Gorelick, has racked up during his Grammy award-winning career. Now, the alto sax musician is making his way to the Queen City to perform with the Charlotte Symphony.
On the eve of launching a cross-country tour, G took some time to chat with South Charlotte Weekly about life, love, music, art and so much more.
What are you working on now that has you most inspired?
“I’m taking a break right now and just practicing a lot. And doing concerts.”
What’s it like to get back on the road again? Do you get energized by your fans? Are there parts of touring that you love and/or hate?
“I’ve never really been off the road! I love playing live. It’s challenging and so rewarding. I do get energized by the whole concert experience. The other musicians, the crowd, etc… the traveling can get on one’s nerves, but once I hit the stage, it’s always worth it.”
Your teenage son, Max, is following in your footsteps. How do you feel when you see your son creating incredible music? Knowing how tough the business can be, is there are a part of you that thinks, “Don’t do it!” Or do you say, “This is an incredible ride. Enjoy the journey!”
“He has found his passion, and I’m really happy for him and happy to have played a role in inspiring him.”
Creatively, where do you draw your inspiration?
“It just comes from my life and the things that happen to me.”
What’s the secret to longevity as an artist?
“Keep trying to get better. I practice 2.5 hours every day in the hopes of becoming a better saxophone player. That is what motivates me, and I know that the people that like my music can see that I am very dedicated to doing the very best that I can for them, both in the studio and live.”
How will performing with the Charlotte Symphony different from performing solo?
“This is going to be so fun! I get to hear the beautiful string arrangements that I have only been able to hear in the studio. It will be very moving emotionally for me to hear my music with the orchestra. The show will be less about up-tempo and energy and more about melody and emotion, as compared to my regular show. Both ways are great, and I can’t wait to get to Charlotte.”
Most recently you appeared in the video “Last Friday Night.” What was it like working with Katy Perry?
“She was incredibly nice and easy to talk to and to be around. She was funny and fun. And my son, Max, got a picture with her so it was pretty cool.”
