Jemal became interested in sports journalism after a standout basketball career at North Carolina Central University … on an intramural team. Because of general laziness and a dearth of basketball talent, Jemal never fulfilled his dream of making it to the NBA. Instead, he went on to do what he does best: watch sports and give his opinions.
Before arriving at Charlotte Weekly in February 2006, Jemal worked for several newspapers, including The Washington Post, The Indianapolis Star and The Charlotte Observer. He was the first African-American general sports columnist in the states of North Carolina and Indiana. Jemal has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Top 10 in Enterprise Reporting by the Associated Press Sports Editors.
Jemal has made guest appearances on ESPN, ESPNEWS, FoxSports, NBA TV and ESPN Radio. Regional and local radio listeners may catch him weekly as a co-host on WFNZ’s “Primetime with the Packman,” one of the top-rated sports-talk radio shows in the country.
