A playground a day …

More than 150 local business leaders, neighborhood and school volunteers joined hands Wednesday, April 18, at Piney Grove Elementary School in East Charlotte to make the 700-member student body’s dream come true. By day’s end, the group had transformed an empty lot into a field full of the dreams of an entire elementary school. The school’s students designed the playground in January with the assistance of Cunningham Associates playground builders. At the end of an hour-long session, students saw their drawings come to life in a 3-D computer-generated design.

Their rendering became reality this month as part of the fifth annual Playground Build of the Business Volunteer Council (formerly known as Business Strengthening America), a coalition of businesses operating in partnership with the United Way. Charlotte is the only American city that has sustained a playground build program with corporate volunteer support since 2002.
