Friends of the Library at Queens host book sale
Friends of the Library at Queens University of Charlotte will hold their fourth annual used book sale Friday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The sale, at Withers House on the corner of Selwyn and Wellesley avenues, will feature more than 10,000 titles including current best sellers and book club selections. Categories include history, travel, biography, children, music, cooking, architecture, gardening, self-help and religious titles. Proceeds will benefit Everett Library on the Queens campus and will be used to buy new books and resource materials for students and faculty.
Ten local students win National Merit Scholarships
Ten area high school seniors are among 2,500 who won $2,500 National Merit Scholarships. A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors selected the winners from a pool of about 15,000 finalists who have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Sixty-one North Carolina students were selected for the honor. Area winners are Anne Browning and Bo-Shan Xiang of Myers Park High School, Heather Johnson of Covenant Day School, Alexander Kilkka of South Mecklenburg High School, Jonathan Morgan of Charlotte Christian School, Harper Seldin of Providence Day School, Jonathan Slaughter of Charlotte Country Day School, Lauren Woolsey of Providence High School, Joseph Glaser-Reich of Charlotte Latin School and Amanda Sullivan of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
Student receives Xavier University award
Peter Johnson of Charlotte Catholic High School has accepted an Honor Scholarship and a Buschmann Award from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Peter is the son of Paul and Antoinette Johnson of Charlotte.
CCDS students running to raise money for New Orleans
More than 660 students from Charlotte Country Day School in junior kindergarten through fourth grade took part in a “Boosterthon Fun Run” on Wednesday, May 9, to raise money for Fisher Elementary School in New Orleans, which is still recovering from damage sustained during Hurricane Katrina.
Students were encouraged to ask for pledges of $1 per lap. Each child ran an average of 25-30 laps around the school’s track.
The eight-day fund-raiser began April 30 when lower school students took part in a pep rally to kick off a week of activities leading up to the run a program designed to combine community service, character education and fitness.
This past year, lower school students collected $4,000 in change to support the Ben Franklin Elementary School in New Orleans.
Robinson Middle science team places first
The Jay M. Robinson Middle School team won first place in the state in the Science Olympiad on April 21 and will represent North Carolina in the National Parade of States at the Science Olympiad opening ceremonies and national competition May 18-20 in Kansas. The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.
CPCC SIFE team wins regional competition
Helping homeless shelter residents gain employment earned Central Piedmont Community College’s Students in Free Enterprise team a trip to the SIFE USA National Exposition in Dallas. The team was named a SIFE USA regional champion in March. After presenting a report of their yearlong community outreach projects, the team took the honor for eight team projects in the Charlotte community, including an Uptown Shelter project called New Beginnings. In the effort, shelter residents were taught how to complete an online application and employment forms, interviewing skills and other employment tips. SIFE is an international nonprofit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that focus on market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and business ethics.
