Providence Day School keeps creeks clean
For the second time in four years, the cleanup committee of Providence Day’s Beta Club received accolades from Mecklenburg County’s Adopt-A-Stream program. At a May 15 county commission meeting, juniors Hannah Brown and Christina Kelly accepted an award recognizing the group’s service toward local streams and ecological improvement in the county. Members of the organization spend one Saturday a month cleaning McAlpine and McMullen creeks.
Major green gift for Queens University of Charlotte
The Robert Haywood Morrison Foundation of Charlotte committed $1 million dollars to Queens University of Charlotte in support of a new nursing and science education center. Green-friendly technology will be installed in the 50,000-square-foot building.
“The new sciences and health building will provide space for a broad array of Queens’ educational programs, from its thriving nursing majors to its emerging geology concentration,” said Cynthia Haldenby Tyson, president of the Robert Haywood Morrison Foundation. “The facility’s state-of-the-art design will feature ‘green’ technology, incorporating many environmentally sustainable features – qualities of interest to our Foundation’s namesake, Mr. Robert Haywood Morrison.” The lobby of the new building will be named in honor of the businessman and science advocate.
CMS places at top of Odyssey of the Mind finals
Olde Providence Elementary, Alexander Graham Middle and Myers Park High schools were three of more than 800 teams that participated in the 2007 Odyssey of the Mind finals at Michigan State University. Alexander Graham Middle tied with a team from Poland for first place in the “Around the World in 8 Minutes” category. Myers Park was awarded fourth place in one category and 22nd in another, and Olde Providence took home a sixth-place finish in its first appearance in the competition.
