Two CMS groups seeking grants
Cochrane Middle School has applied for a grant to help boost reading test scores for its exceptional children and limited English proficiency students. The school is requesting more than $359,000 from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to start Cochrane’s Opportunity to Learn through Technology. Grant funds will be used to purchase equipment including laptops and software, hire staff to expand access to the school’s media center and computer lab before and after school, and increase professional-development opportunities for teachers.
Research shows the learning disabilities and language barriers faced by EC and LEP students play a major role in low reading test scores and growing achievement gaps. Thirteen percent of Cochrane’s student population is LEP; the district average is 8.9 percent.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, in partnership with the Center for Math, Science and Technology, has applied for a three-year, $900,000 grant to enhance math and science courses in six middle schools. The schools are Cochrane, Davidson, McClintock, Jay M. Robinson, J.T. Williams and Kennedy.
The urban ecosystems grant will allow all math and science teachers from the six schools to attend a camp for three summers to learn more about curriculum-based activities, strategies for teaching math and science, and leadership skills to positively impact students’ end-of-grade and end-of-course scores. All grant winners will be notified in May.
