Providence Day, Olympic High students aid shelter renovation project

The Relatives kicked off a long-awaited renovation of its 75-year-old East Boulevard youth homeless shelter with a cocktail reception and project overview at The Morehead Inn on April 13.
The effort is sponsored by students in the National Honor Society at Providence Day School, which adopted the shelter for homeless and runaway youths several months ago. In February, students, parents and faculty organized a yard sale and raised more than $8,000. The group also plans to paint the interior of the building, replace much of the furniture and contribute to other interior projects.
A class of budding philanthropists at Olympic High School in Charlotte awarded a $5,000 grant to the shelter in January. The students, going by the name “Trojan Teams with a Cause,” will replace carpeting throughout the house with support from the United Way of the Central Carolinas.
The Relatives provides a nine-bed shelter for homeless and runaway youths and operates a 24-hour crisis hotline. The facility will receive several major physical improvements with the help of local corporations, churches, schools and individuals. The Relatives provided services to hundreds of youths last year and offered overnight shelter to more than 250 youths.
