Exchange educators receive honors
International-exchange teachers from China and the Philippines and an elementary school principal in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system have received honors for excellence in providing students an international education.
Lirong Wang, a visiting Chinese language teacher from China at the International Studies School at Garinger High School, and Alethea Florido, an advanced placement physics and physical science teacher at Garinger, have been named N.C. Outstanding Cultural Educators.
Myrna Meehan, principal of Winding Springs Elementary School, has been named N.C. International Education Advocate of the Year.
The awards are from the Visiting International Faculty Program, which is sponsoring 128 international teachers at CMS and about 900 statewide this year.
Transportation letters mailed from CMS
Parents of students in Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools should have received letters regarding school transportation for the 2007-08 school year. The deadline to submit transportation registration forms is May 25.
Students who received a letter and are eligible for transportation for the 2007-08 school year may request transportation changes by calling 980-343-7433 or accessing a transportation registration form at www.cms.k12.nc and returning it to CMS Transportation Registration, 5001 Airport Transportation Center Parkway, Suite B, Charlotte, NC 28208. Parents with questions can call 980-343-6715.
Trinity Episcopal School accepting day camp applications
Trinity Episcopal School is seeking current students in preschool through eighth grade for its Wildcat Summer Camp program, June 11-Aug. 17. Registration will be open through May 15. Hood Hargett Breakfast Club selects student of the year
Lauren White, a North Mecklenburg senior who overcame severe anemia to excel in cross country, track and field and swimming, was recently named the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club Student of the Year. White, who has a weighted GPA of 5.125, received a $5,000 scholarship as part of the honor. She is the daughter of Trisha and Craig White of Charlotte and plans to attend Harvard University this fall.

Dipping for Darfur raises funds
Inspired by a March story in Charlotte Weekly about a Darfur fund-raiser, three Ballantyne-area high school juniors have raised more than $1,500 toward Dollars for Darfur, a national high school campaign to help stop genocide in Darfur.
Aubrey Berry, Meredith Gainer and Elleana Goldman, all students at Ardrey Kell High School, sponsored an evening of ice cream and beverages at Cold Stone Creamery and at Encore Bistro in the Blakeney Shopping Center on Monday, April 16. A portion of proceeds from both venues benefited the campaign. The group will continue to accept donations at their Web site through Monday, April 30. South Meck student selected for U.S. Air Force Academy
Jeremy Granow, a senior at South Mecklenburg High School, has been offered an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy for the class entering in fall 2007. Granow, nominated by N.C. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, is the son of Robert and Nanci Granow of Charlotte.
